Vacation day two
5th-Apr-2016 04:58 pm
Day Two of vacation and we're kind of freaking out about all the stuff we want to do but aren't sure we have time for. In fact, we're pretty sure we don't have time for it. And all we can do about it is just keep moving forward and hope for the best.

In the meantime, we have various thoughts going on, the most important of which I keep remembering and then forgetting and then remembering again, and it's that oh my goodness the creator of Your Lie In April is going to be at Anime Expo! I don't believe it! All this time we've spent translating manga, and for the first time ever, the creator of something we translated is going to be at Anime Expo and we might get to meet him! ...Okay, so we did get to meet the creator of Higurashi: When They Cry last year, but we translated the manga, not the original work. But we did get to talk to him in the food court, so maybe I should not discount that experience. And I will say for the second time ever! We might get to meet the creator of something we translated! We won't worry about cosplay this time, though, because there aren't really any good Your Lie In April characters for us to cosplay.

Another thought is annoyance at Viz, because about a year ago there was a recap episode of Sailor Moon, and they aired it all by itself instead of having two episodes like they've done every other week. That meant that the numbers were off, but we thought for sure they would fix it by the time they got to the end. Everybody knows Sailor Moon is 200 episodes long, so you have to end it on an even number. We thought they would show just one episode one week, or maybe do something really nice and show three, and that way we'd be back on track to show the last two episodes together.

So last night, we watched episodes 198 and 199. And next week, they will show the last episode all by itself, which is so silly because it's so much better to end the series in a nice big chunk. Nevertheless, we did end up watching three episodes of Sailor Moon last night, because the new season of Crystal just started! Woo. It was more like a half of an episode, with a bunch of transformation sequences. The transformation sequences are what really make me wonder why bother with a remake? The first series' transformations were so perfect! If they were going to remake it anyway, I wish they'd done something completely different instead of just tweaking the original ones. Ah well. I agree that, a half-episode of nothing but transformation sequences aside, this season is a little more promising than the rest of the series. But mostly we just want them to get to the Dead Moon Circus stuff so we can see who will play the Amazon Trio and Pegasus.

And finally, the very first, ultra-beginner level project on the loom is a striped scarf, where there's more of one color than the other. The colors we have a lemon grass and boysenberry, so we're taking a survey to see if anyone has any idea which way it would look better--more lemon grass, or more boysenberry? Athena's mostly leaning toward boysenberry (so it would be a boysenberry/lemon grass check pattern most of the time, but with stripes of all boysenberry (lengthwise); the other option would be to have striped of all lemon grass), but she might be persuaded.

Today I'm thankful for the super cute little skeins of yarn that came with the loom, still having plenty of time today, ice cream being on sale at the grocery store, getting to read the latest Skip Beat! (this wasn't the most intense volume, but man I wish there were more of it!), realizing that "weft" may or may not be related to the past tense of "weave" (like "left" and "bereft" and "cleft"), and for the second time ever maybe being able to meet someone whose work we translated.

Oh! That's a good thought about weft!! Interesting!

I like green, so if I were making the scarf, I would make that the dominant colour. But if you like purple best, then you should do that! Or consider whether you want an overall lighter-coloured or darker-coloured piece (I'm guessing the lemongrass is a lighter colour than the boysenberry), or what would look best on you when you wear it, or what outfits you might wear it with...

I saw some comparison shots of the old/new transformation art (still images, not animated) and I liked the newer ones better overall (the original Mars one had a cool flower pattern at the end though...). But I guess I agree that if they're making the sequences same-but-different, rather than completely-different, it's likely to raise questions of "why wasn't it like this in the first place?"

Yay for hopefully getting to meet the creator of a thing you translated!!! Somehow I would have expected it to be a little more common since you've been to many cons, but they don't really bring manga artists over as often, except like the big Shonen Jump ones and stuff. When I think I could have met Masakazu Ishiguro (author of the series I letter for Crunchyroll/JManga-at-the-time)!!! But I had to go and be in Japan that weekend...

Oh, new Skip Beat!!! I want to read more too. Always. I reread 37 first to remember what happened last time (because one simply can't flip through a volume of Skip Beat! without slowing down to reread it properly), and that one had all the intensity...

We like all the colors, so we tend to go with whatever we feel like looks better. Sometimes green, sometimes purple. It's going to look simultaneously pretty good and a little strange either way in this case...

You really have to see the sequences in the form they're meant to be viewed in, though, which in this case would be animation. A lot of the stills from Crystal look very pretty, but then when you watch the actual thing, you're like, "What is this?" In the case of the transformation sequences, the Infinity arc is a little tiny bit better, but there's a lot of bizarre emphasis on posing. With the other soldiers than Moon (we still like soldier instead of guardian), it's a little nice to have the higher-quality special effects, but the proportions in the animation can look really strange, and there's a lot of rubberiness going on. For Sailor Moon herself, the S transformation sequence was by far the best, and Crystal took out all the stuff that made it fun, and hers has the most rubberiness.

On top of that, the non-Moon transformations are longer, which is okay if you're only having one per episode, but when you have ALL FIVE of them transforming at once, by the time they're done it's been so long you can barely remember why they transformed to begin with. In the original series, they almost never showed all of them in sequence, and when they did, they edited them to make it shorter. I love a good transformation sequence, but you also have to factor in how it fits into the story.

I know, right? I mean, we did stop going to conventions for several years, but we've still been to a bunch! But you're right, manga artists don't usually get invited anymore, although they seem to be making a comeback.

Yeah, sometimes it seems like it would be nice to just always be reading Skip Beat!, and when you finish, you just start back at the beginning... Ah, but who has the time?

So I've been thinking about it more and, putting aside my own love of green, I do agree that making it mainly the darker colour with accents of the lighter would be a nice look, and give the design more of a pop? (that's a good thing, if vague.)

I want to clarify just in case, I was talking about screenshots comparing the transformations in the earlier and latest seasons of Crystal (like this), and not saying anything about the original original series. Maybe you knew that, but some of it sounded like you were comparing the two separate series and I realize I might not have been clear? (I still haven't watched the original in ages, but my memory of all those transformation sequences was that they were just beautiful as-is.) In either case, it is a very good point that the new animation would be best judged as animation and not stills. (and also that having all of them in a single episode takes up a lot of the available time...)

Fortunately(?), we've been too distracted to worry about the colors today. It's going to be pretty intense when it actually comes time to make the decision! (Or not. We'll see.)

Oooooohhhhhhhhh, okay, it all makes sense now. I'm sorry for being vague. When I asked about the point of doing a remake (in the original post), I meant, "Why bother doing a Sailor Moon reboot from square one if you're just going to copy the already very well done series that has existed for twenty years?" In other words, yes, we were comparing Crystal transformation sequences to the ones from the original original series, and that's what we thought the conversation was about all along.

I do remember thinking, while we watched the latest episode of Crystal, that the transformation sequences were a little less annoying than they had been, but we haven't been following all the news so we didn't realize they had polished them up for the new season. In fact, we didn't even know the new season had started until Hulu started playing it for us after those episodes of Sailor Stars.

Until I read Lyschan's comments, I didn't realize one was green and the other purple! I like the primary color to be dark with light accents.
But if you say boyson berry and lemon grass, I would have guessed it was blue and yellow.
6th-Apr-2016 04:39 pm (UTC) - Re: Colors
I did not name the colors, the color names are printed on the paper around each skein of yarn. It's not my fault that you don't know boysenberries are purple and lemon grass is green. ...Okay, so it might be my fault that I haven't posted any pictures of the very purple boysenberry plush that we bought at Knott's Berry Farm. But I did post about the colors of the yarn on Saturday, so...
6th-Apr-2016 04:43 pm (UTC) - Re: Colors
It's OK. The problem is me! I don't really know the names of colors past the BIG 7. People tell me things like "wine" or "champaign" and I think, why don't you just say light red or dark red?
6th-Apr-2016 05:02 pm (UTC) - Re: Colors
That's a joke based on the fact that champagne is a gold color, right?
6th-Apr-2016 05:07 pm (UTC) - Re: Colors
Umm... yeah. Let's say it was a joke. In fact, a really good joke!
