Pre-trip jitters

The plan for today was to finish the last volume of Ice Reaper before lunch, then have a nice long afternoon to relax and maybe get some stuff ready for our trip to Japan. That plan was thwarted last night when we got an email about more work. ...And suddenly I feel bad for whining about work. It's not that I don't like the work; I just don't like the timing of the work.

So basically we have another volume of a very time-consuming series due as soon as possible, before the month is over if we can swing that at all. We translated a chapter today (complete with edit) and it took about half a workday. And there are eleven chapters left. I think we could probably finish the whole thing within the first few days of February, even if we don't work on it during our trip, but we also have a Noragami due ASAP when we get back, and a volume of Chaika that hasn't been scheduled yet, but it was one of our two options for "can you get one of these done after Corpse Party but before your trip?" ...If we're lucky, the trip to Japan will be very relaxing.

On the bright side, now we can brag that we're just over one week into the year and we've already translated more than two and a half books!

In the meantime, our departure is looming ever nearer, and while we didn't spend a whole lot of time being nervous about new experiences, the anxiety started creeping in last night and it hit pretty hard this morning. We still definitely think it's a good idea to go, but we're also feeling the, "What were we thinking!? We can't go to Japan! Let's just stay here where we're safe and isolated and get all our work done."

Fortunately, I've also been having flashbacks to Tokyo Disney Parks throughout the day, and I've been telling myself it's okay, we're not forbidden from wandering around Tokyo. I guess a big part of my anxiety comes from a fear that I'll be told I'm not supposed to be somewhere, so it does help to think about it and realize that nobody's going to kick us out or anything.

There is still one matter of concern, and that's that our travel buddy is currently in the hospital. Apparently she's been having digestive problems since around Christmas, and they got bad enough during this last week that she decided to see a doctor, who sent her to a specialist, who sent her to the ER. They've been doing tests since then, and she's still waiting to see if they'll let her travel. I think Athena and I can handle going on our own, but she was so excited about this trip, it would be just awful if she had to miss it. We've been praying for her, and I thought we should get the word out in case anybody else felt so inclined.

Today I'm thankful for finishing the Ice Reaper manga, managing to get a chapter done of this other manga (it's nothing new, but I'm still iffy on whether or not it's okay to talk about it), having a fun time playing household scavenger hunt on Facebook last night, having a lovely dinner with the missionaries, and having leftover pizza.

Our workload continues to be exactly the same. (I lettered two books this week—one partly started before the new year— and have another I'll be wrapping up this weekend.)

(also, I'm trying to figure out what time-consuming, nothing-new but iffy-to-talk-about series with 12 chapters in a book you could be referring to. was it in the collage?)

Oh no about your friend!!! I hope her health issues clear up soon and don't affect travel plans; I will remember her (and you) in my prayers! Don't be anxious, but go and have fun and do not think about work :) You need this break!

Ha, ha, ha... Yeeeah. Good luck with your work!

(It wasn't in the collage because we kept forgetting to mention it, but it's the one we won the right to translate.)

Thanks for all the support! (Sadly, we will have to think about work a little bit, because UQ Holder! is a simulpub and we're too possessive to let anybody else translate it while we're gone. But it's only two chapters in two weeks! ...Well, three, because there will probably be a Persona Q chapter, too, but still!)

(Ohhh yeah, that one. ...I get a little annoyed about that sort of release (and companies wanting it done at a time that's inconvenient to me) because what do they care? it's digital, they can throw an ebook out there any old time. i'm assuming. i don't actually have a clue where one is supposed to go to read your translation of this series, which is pretty problematic in itself. I hope they're paying you decently.)

Oh right, simulpubs. You're so committed! I don't hold SoreMachi quite so dearly these days, but the couple times I did have a busy (social) schedule and suggested ahead of time that they ask someone else to letter a chapter, they just delayed the release (or the release languished in an unfinished state while nobody bothered finding a replacement?) till I had time to do it. So. Could just be the middlemen I'm working for are especially unorganized though (and this was like a couple days delayed, not weeks).

(Yeah, we have no idea what's up with the release, either! That's why we're not sure if it's okay to talk about it. We actually feel a little extra indebted about this one, because I think it was around last May that our project manager asked us to do volume one as soon as possible, and we didn't actually finish it until October. When we did finish it, we said we'd make sure to schedule volume two in so we wouldn't have the same problem, but she said hold up on that, she's not sure what the release situation is going to be. So we did, and then our schedule got jammed with other stuff and now here we are. Again. But in our project manager's defense, she did ask if we could do it or if our schedule is too tight.)

We've always been rather possessive. Even the series we like the least have us hesitant to hand off to somebody else, but we like UQ Holder! a lot, so. And it usually doesn't talk more than a couple hours, so it shouldn't detract too much from our vacation. And we know that this agency can find other people to do it, or else we wouldn't have translated any chapters of Arslan.

"... the trip to Japan will be very relaxing."
Wishing you a fun and relaxing trip :)
I'm sorry about your travel buddy's illness. Thinking of her for speedy recovery and being able to go on the trip.

Thanks! She's back from the hospital now, and if all goes well, she's coming with us!

Sending healing and a speedy recovery to your friend! I hope she is able to go with you, and that she's generally okay.

Try not to stress too much. I know you'll have a good time. :)

Could you put the links to your last trip to Japan here again? I seem to have lost the last ones you posted. -_-;

She's back from the hospital, and if all goes well, she will be coming with us!

Thanks, we'll do our best!

And here is the link to the very beginning of our last Japan trip report. We got the link through our archive, so you should be able to just click on the next date link at the bottom to get to the rest of it. It's really long, so if you'd rather just read about certain parts (our trip can be broken down into Disneyland, DisneySea, Akihabara, church, and Ikebukuro; the first two categories are significantly longer than the others), let us know, and we'll get you the corresponding links.
