Good news and bad news
9th-Feb-2015 07:43 pm
Well, the bad news is we turned down the trip to Japan. We had to respond by the ninth, and that just wasn't enough time for us to figure out how to scrape together the money for another ticket (the prize was for one person) and expedited passports, or a strategy for getting all of our work done by deadline while taking time off for a trip. It's not that we didn't want to go--in fact I think I had mostly gotten over my "please don't take me out of my cave" phase, despite spending so much time with a bunch of people we don't know, some of whom are self-professed deliberate annoyers. It just didn't seem like the right time. Of course there's always the fear that our ingratitude in turning down such an opportunity will cause the universe to decide that we don't deserve to go to Japan again ever, but we think that's unlikely.

The good news is it looks like we might possibly not miss our Noragami deadline, despite taking time off to work on this other thing. The jury's still out, though. But anyway, there's some pretty intense stuff going on in Noragami right now (where "right now" is a completely arbitrary term meaning "the point in the series where the Twins are currently translating"), and we left Yato in the middle of a fight! Oh well; I'm sure he'll get over it.

The other good news is that we had a great skipper on the Jungle Cruise on Friday. When we were passing by Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye and she called the tourists "wildlife," she told the joke that goes, "Watch out for the little ones. They latch onto you for eighteen to thirty-six years and just suck the life right out of you," she added, "At least, that's what my mom tells me. Every day of my life." And when we went through the hippopotamus pool and she shot into the trees to scare them away, she said, "Good, I scared the ones in the water and got the one in the trees. You didn't see the one in the trees? When you've been here as long as I have...you start to see them in the trees." And she had great timing and delivery. It was nice.

Anyway, speaking of the translation battle, we've had some strange responses. For example, when it got announced on Anime News Network, we read the comments about it, and someone was really excited because we translated Fruits Basket, so hopefully this win will revitalize our career. We were like, "Uh, I don't know about you, but I don't think I can take much more vitality in my career." We're not complaining, of course. We're having a lot of fun right now. But we're also ridiculously busy.

That being the case, it's time for us to get some dinner and finally relax.

Today I'm thankful for having another fun title to work on, it arriving with plenty of time for us to work on it today, having leftover donuts from Gaston's craving on Saturday night, it being warm enough for Page to use her heated cat bed again (yeah, we don't know what's up with that, either; but it's awfully cute!), and having some time to relax tonight.

Aww... I'm sorry you had to turn down the trip to Japan. It is understandable given the short notice and only winning one ticket and, like, everything. But this way maybe I can go with you when you plan your next visit!

The commenter hoping for your win to revitalize your career... I mean, maybe they just don't pay attention to recent book credits? It's a nice thought from them, though :) (reminds me of a sweet friend from church asking me once how work was going (at a time when it was coming out my ears) and telling me that their family had been praying I was getting enough work to get by. I couldn't help thinking, "So this is your fault!!" (but I did appreciate it, of course.))

The Jungle Cruise jokes!!! Those ones are great. :D

Ahhh, Noragami! Intense, huh? And Yato trapped in an unending battle until you return to free him!! (which makes him sound like a Damsel in Distress, which makes me laugh...) Eeeeeeek~ And also, congrats once again on a new new-series!!

Thanks. We were a little bummed about it, but we haven't had time to focus on it, so at this point it's already like, "Oh! Was that a thing? ...I guess it was." That would be awesome if we could go together!

Yeah, that was kind of our thoughts about the commenter--nice thought, but are you paying attention? Maybe they just thought that we wouldn't be entering manga contests if we had real work to do. And/or maybe they just read a lot of Viz manga. That's a great story about the family at church.

Yes, Noragami 5 is VERY intense! Oh my goodness! We got back to it today and GAAAH! We might have just finished our whole first draft if we didn't have other plans tonight. Yato as a damsel in distress seems so fitting somehow...

Being an adult really sucks sometimes. I'm sorry you guys had to turn down the trip. =(

Yeah, it's a bummer. Fortunately, all the work that's making us too busy is also ridiculously fun (or at least it is this week), so it's easy to look on the bright side. (And I saved 15% on insurance by switching to Geico! (not true))

It's a shame about having to turn down the trip (and their deadline for you accepting seems awfully short), but you're right that there'll surely be another chance down the road.

Yeah, it's a bummer. The deadline makes sense, though, since the award ceremony is in two weeks--they'd want to make arrangements. As for why it took so long for the announcement to be made when voting stopped at least a week before that... But there could be all kinds of factors we don't know about. Thanks for the support!
