Who now?

Last night our friend came over and we watched Classic Doctor Who. As it turns out, her dad had the Beginnings DVD, featuring the first episodes with the first doctor. It was pretty funny, because it has two different versions of the first episode (I'm guessing the pilot and the official first episode, but I haven't checked so I don't know for sure), so we watched one episode, and when the next episode started, it was almost exactly the same...and then the title was the same! And we didn't know that was going to happen, so Athena said, "I feel like I'm in some kind of strange time loop," and I said, "Well played, Doctor." Since he's supposed to be a time lord. But we haven't gotten into any of those details, so I figure he doesn't have the ability to trap people in time loops, but still. I guess you had to be there.

Anyway, overall my opinion is that the series drives me crazy. I like all the characters a lot, and I'm eager to find out what the deal is with everything, but everything happens so slowly and repetitively that it makes me want to yell at them to get on with it. We realize that's probably just because we're watching the older episodes (like maybe in the sixties, people had stuff to do besides watching TV, so the episodes were designed so that people could divide their attention and not miss too much), since our friend says the fourth doctor episodes (her favorites) didn't move that slowly.

It was pretty interesting seeing the two different versions of the first episode, because the script was almost exactly the same, but it had definitely all been re-filmed. (We knew for sure when we got to the scene where Susan was dancing, and she didn't look nearly as high.) The doctor was a lot meaner to Susan in the first version, which did not fit the image of him we'd gotten from the Aztecs episodes at all. He even called her stupid! But it was fun to hear him say "quite so" all the time, because they say that a lot in the Sherlock Holmes books.

There was one part that had me like, "Wait a second." They were talking about how smart Susan was, and how she couldn't solve a problem by only factoring in the first three dimensions--she had to use the fourth and fifth, too. So her teacher said okay, I guess the fourth dimension is time, so what's the fifth? And she says space. But the first three dimensions are dimensions of space, aren't they? Well, I guess the point is that Susan and the doctor are higher life forms and understand stuff better, but...I don't know.

I think that's really all I have to say. We have plans to watch more next week (if we don't cancel them because of jury duty and work), and then we'll decide whether or not to buy more DVDs. It's tough, because I know that we could just skip ahead to faster-paced episodes, but I'm already invested in these characters!

Today I'm thankful for getting to see the first Doctor Who episodes with a friend, getting our work done today, having quarters to do laundry with, our friend giving us a bag of pretzels, and having our visiting teaching assignments.
