"We believe in the literal gathering of Israel, and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory."
To be honest, I'm really not sure what to say about this one. I think probably the reason it was the hardest one for me to memorize is that I don't quite understand it. I mean, on the one hand, it's pretty straightforward. But on the other hand...I guess I'm not so good at thinking about the future. It's also possible that the reason I had a hard time remembering it is that "paradisiacal" is a bit of a hard word.
Anyway, after doing a little research, we found a talk that explains the gathering of Israel pretty well here. For some reason, I have a hard time articulating the concept myself, but I think basically it means that the children of Israel were scattered all over the world, and now they're being gathered back to Christ, who was the leader all along. There will be a more literal gathering at some point in the future, but now they're all being gathered in a more spiritual sense--the sense of being brought back to Christ through conversion. That's one of many reasons we keep sending missionaries all over the place.
The New Jerusalem being built on the American continent is not an American imperialist thing--we're pretty sure that the old Jerusalem is still going to be pretty important, too. If I understand things correctly, the New Jerusalem being built in America has more to do with the land being appointed from ancient times, and not anything to do with patriotism. I'm not sure if that makes sense.
Anyway, I think the rest is definitely straightforward, but, as always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
Today I'm thankful for choir practice going well today, the great discussion we had in Sunday school, the tasty brownies we had in Relief Society, helpful conference talks, and having the new tithing slips explained to us.
