Fairy tales!

I think it's harder to post on Saturdays than on weekdays... Or probably it's just harder to post today. Not a lot happened. But we did discover that Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi, aka Okami-san, is streaming via FUNimation. This was exciting news, because we kept seeing it mentioned in the Japanese anime/game newsletter we subscribe to, and we kept wanting to see it, but Crunchyroll didn't have it, and somehow we missed the fact that FUNimation got it, so we were sad. Until this morning, that is!

All we knew about it was that it seemed to have something to do with fairy tales, and one of our favorite voice actors (Miyu Irino) was in it. Fairy tales and Irino-kun are more than enough to get us interested in an anime. And today we watched the first episode and it was awesome. It wasn't what we expected, because for some reason when we hear "fairy tale," we think German woodland. This of course triggers my tangent about how people seem to hate a series when they expected one thing from it and got something different, and how that can be a little sad, because that doesn't mean it's any less good, it just means that it's not the story you already thought it would be. But that rant hasn't been fully formed, so I'll just get back to Okami-san.

It takes place in modern-day Japan, and all of the characters seem connected to fairy tales, but only in name... so far, anyway. And that reminds me of one of the other great things about it--it's not only based on Western fairy tales, it has at least two Japanese fairy tales in it! Though come to think of it, there are a lot of Japanese fairy tales that are similar to Western fairy tales, like Issun Boshi, who's a lot like Tom Thumb or the Thumbling (I recently discovered there are actually a few Grimm fairy tales about boys who are very tiny). And there's a Grimm fairy tale about a girl who stays with elves for three days and it turns out to actually have been seven years, which is not only like Rip Van Winkle, but also like the story of Urashima Taro, who goes down to visit the Dragon King under the sea and goes back to Japan, like, two hundred years later. But anyway, Urashima Taro is in this anime!

Um... this is not entirely coherent, but anyway, Okami-san. It's fun! (At least, the first episode is.) If I were to say that some parts of it might not make a whole lot of sense if you don't know Japanese or the stories they reference, would that sound like genuine concern or bragging? And would it turn people off, or would it make them think, "Oh come on, I'm sure it makes sense," thus spurring them to watch it and prove it?

Anyway, the overall story will make sense, of course; just some of the characters' quirks will be more like, "Wha?" But maybe it will be even funnier that way, like the one time we were watching the dub of Mewtwo Strikes Back, and Team Rocket was dressed as vikings, and someone was like, "I didn't know vikings existed anymore!" and Ash was like, "They mostly live in Minnesota," and we thought it was the funniest thing ever because it was so completely and utterly random. And then we found out that there's a sports team in Minnesota called the Vikings, and the joke wasn't random anymore so it wasn't nearly as funny. We were sad.

Okay, that's enough rambling! Today I'm thankful for getting to see Okami-san after all, finally getting back to our Disney Reading Project, once again being surrounded by adorable kitties, reminders to keep a closer eye on FUNimation's streaming series, and amusing tangents about Bambi's mother.
