Icon meme!

We forgot to get the mail yesterday, and when we finally got it this morning, there was a check inside! It was from TokyoPop, and it had a slightly early payment for one book, and a super early payment for another book! Whoa! It kind of feels like TokyoPop is calling out to us, "Come... Come to Anime Expo..." But unfortunately, it's still not enough. Things are looking a little extra dire, actually (due to other developments that we'd rather not talk about). We're optimistic, but even if we get our check from Yen Press, Anime Expo isn't looking like a wise idea. Hrm.

In a complete change of subject, we're participating in a meme! From coastal_spirit.

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.

2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

This was made for us by baranoneko. Ouran High School Host Club was going on at the time, so of course, it being very popular, everybody had a bunch of icons of it all of a sudden! And here we were, the only people in the world (where by world, we mean "our friends list," according to our self-centered notions, and "our apartment" according to what is most likely to be the actual case) who actually were exactly (where by "exactly" we mean "pretty darn close to exactly") like the Hitachiins (a common icon feature), and we had nothing! Nothing!!

So we whined to Kat, and she made us not one, but three icons! Unfortunately, the other two seem to have been left on our now-dead older computer. The Japanese text says "koakuma-kei," or "little devil type," so we use it when we're teasing people. Of course, we also have our "evil twin" icon (see the next icon description for a general idea of how that came about), so we use them alternately, depending on what we feel like.

This icon actually came much later than the first one, and in fact we made it ourselves! Tadah! We had made more friends on LJ, and all of them seemed to have more Host Club icons than we did (see above), so we wanted to go on an icon-making spree. Athena points out that she wanted more icons in general. I also think we were considering making a Hikaru & Kaoru mood set at the time? (We definitely were thinking of doing that; I just don't know when the timing was.) Anyway, since we were trying to make more icons, we would come up with lines that would be funny on icons, and this was one of them. Of course, the obvious choice for a character to go with it was Honey-sempai.

We use this icon for when we want to be whiny and pouty. Part of the reasoning is that usually after I write an entry complaining about something, we think it sounds a little silly, so this icon is a way of gently poking fun at ourselves for being pouty and whiny.

Oh, thinking of the origins of this icon brings back memories. Waaaay back when, before we even had a Live Journal, we had gotten together with a few friends from college and started an anime forum. Our goal was to try to get all the anime fans on campus to get together in like a club or something, but the anime branch of the sci-fi club was like, "But we're the anime club! Waaaahhh!" so it ended up mostly being just the group that we had already formed. Anyway, at one point we went into another crazy icon-making phase, because everybody was being funny with their icons, and we wanted to try to be funny too. This was one of the results.

Our two favorite manga series at the time were Saiyuki and DN Angel, so it wasn't too hard to come up with this icon for DN Angel's Dark Mousy. This time, Athena already knew about this picture, and thought the line matched it perfectly. The font we used for "dark side" is the same one we used when doing our own for-friends-and-fun translations of DN Angel, for when Dark signed his notes. The rest of it is, of course, the Star Wars font.

This is from a much more recent icon-making phase. (Our icon phases seem to be shorter and shorter these days...) We'd been wanting one of these for a while before that, so eventually Athena finally sat down, got the screen cap, and slapped the text on it. This is Abe no Yasuaki from Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time, another one of those stories where the modern Japanese girl gets pulled into another world that's like a historical Asian country in order to create a harem become a priestess and save that world.

Yasuaki is an onmyoji, or yin-yang master, or whatever they call them, and his catchphrase is "mondai nai (there is no problem)." It just seemed to work so well for an icon, and Yasuaki is so very pretty, so there you have it.

Suddenly I'm thinking (on the last one) that I should explain who the characters are first. This is Pearl Fey (or Harumi Ayasato) from the Ace Attorney series, a series of DS games where you play as a defense attorney who has to prove all his clients innocent. Apparently the only way to do this is to find the real killer and prove they did it. Pearl is the cute little girl character who helps out with her mysterious spirit-channeling techniques.

We wanted to make this icon because at one point in time we suddenly started getting a lot of compliments from people. This made us all bashful and stuff, so we wanted an appropriate icon. We tried to make it ourselves, but it wasn't quite turning out the way we wanted it to, so chibidrunksanzo was kind enough to make it for us.

And now! This meme gave us the push we needed to finish another icon we had in the works! We have no idea when we would use it, but the idea was just too funny to pass up! So! without further ado!

Tadah! (I had to put it under a cut so as not to give it away too soon.)

Today I'm thankful for chances to ramble about our icons, getting that check in the mail, finishing that last icon, adorable chapters of Happy Cafe (as if any of them aren't), and getting a warning about the roadwork they're going to do on the parking lot tomorrow so we can figure out how we want to deal with it (waking up to jackhammers is never a pleasant experience).
