But! I called Leia anyway and she came over today and we watched Get Backers and had a very good time. She's hooked on it! Mwa ha ha.
I feel like I had other things to talk about, too. Hm. We found out that Tangled, Disney's version of Rapunzel, is coming out in November. This is very exciting but kind of annoying because November is very far away. We saw a screencap and it looks really cool. Or it might be kind of annoying. See, there's a slight issue we've been having problems with since Enchanted.
In Enchanted, they make a big deal out of the fact that oh wow, the girl is fighting the dragon this time! That was kind of annoying because Giselle wasn't the first Disney heroine to face off against the villain (Mulan kicked some serious butt), but we had so many problems with Enchanted that that wasn't worth dwelling on. But then we found out the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid was changed so that Ariel defeats Ursula. That in itself is not a problem--of course there's nothing wrong with having female characters being physically strong.
The problem is (and this may just come from the fact that we saw Return to Neverland around the same time we heard about the Little Mermaid thing) it's starting to sound like they're forcing women into masculine positions just so the characters won't look weak and the creators won't look sexist. We finally figured out how to put our problem with this into words, but then I never had an opportunity to bring it up, or I just didn't care anymore. Anyway it's this:
We think it's just as sexist to say that a woman is only strong if she's acting like a man as it is to say that she can't do certain things because she's not a man.
It's like saying the only way a woman can be strong is to become a man, instead of acknowledging that women have their own strengths. (I think a good example of feminine strength can be found in Lacus Clyne from Gundam Seed. She's totally calling all the shots in that series.)
Anyway, the screen cap we saw of Rapunzel was very amusing and it looks like the movie will be very fun, but since we have that little hang up about Enchanted, we're a tiny bit wary. We'll just have to see it and find out!
Today I'm thankful for Leia coming over, getting to watch Get Backers, getting all the ice cream, adorable Happy Cafe flashback chapters, and having an idea when Tangled is coming out.
