Sunday

Church was pretty awesome today, as usual. It started out with the one of the senior couples asking us if we at least wanted the newsletter for this month, because we walked past them and declined the programs they were handing out. I had forgotten that it was a new month and therefore time for newsletters, so I went back and got one, and after chatting briefly with the couple (apparently that's the real reason you're supposed to take programs--to chat; this is kind of a foreign concept to us despite being members for many many years), we sat down. We still had time before the meeting started, so we started reading the newsletter, which was pretty awesome as well.

It would seem that this month's theme is the awesomeness of women (to paraphrase), so we had some great quotes in the newsletter like this one from President Hinckley: "Woman is God's supreme creation. Only after the earth had been formed, after the day had been separated from the night, after the waters had been divided from the land, after vegetation and animal life had been created, and after man had been placed on earth, was woman created; and only then was the work pronounced complete and good. Of all the creations of the Almighty, there is none more beautiful, none more inspiring than a lovely daughter of God who walks in virtue, with an understanding of why she should do so, who honors and respects her body as a thing sacred and divine, who cultivates her mind and constantly enlarges the horizon of her understanding, who nurtures her spirit with everlasting truth."

The newsletter was also probably more amusing than it should have been, because there was one part with some pretty funny typos. Our favorites are "delegrated" in place of "delegated" and "compacity" instead of "capacity." We love it because I'm constantly doing similar things as we type up translation scripts, and we really have to watch for them, because we have the spell-check turned off. (OpenOffice was a little overzealous for us, so we got a little overzealous in turning features off.) Anyway, we're thinking of offering our services as proof-readers.

In testimony meeting, one girl talked about when she was helping to prune the grapes in the church vineyard, and how every time they cut a vine, it would cry. And she said, "These poor vines are crying!" And someone else made the comparison to life, and how we go through hard times that make us cry, but the Lord knows how to take care of us, and in the end, we'll be more fruitful because of them.

Then in Relief Society, we had a lesson on being reverent so we can better receive inspiration from the Lord. There was a big emphasis on not letting all the crazy things that are going on in life get in the way. It actually reminds me of Riku in Kingdom Hearts, but it involves a spoiler from Final Mix, so I'll put it behind a cut. In Final Mix, there's an added scene where the King talks to Riku for the first time. He tells him that he's been trying to talk to Riku for a long time (I imagine before he talked to Sora in what became the game tutorial), but he couldn't get through the darkness.

So what we need to do in our lives is make sure to clear away all the darkness so the inspiration can come through.

Today I'm thankful for ward newsletters, more awesome meetings, running into our Disneyland associate and making sure we're still Disneyland associates, reminders to make a list of things we need the Bishop to get us for the library, and not being the only one to make silly typos.
