The usual complaints

And it's another routine Saturday over here. I mean, I guess staying in bed until after ten-thirty isn't technically part of the routine, but after that, it was the same old same old. But we did get to evolve a bunch of Pokemon!

We did spend a lot of time ranting about how to deal with dialects. I think I've already written about that. We once again came across the argument that the Kansai region is too urban to be accurately represented with an American Southern accent, and we're still like, "Uh-huh, 'cause there are no big cities in the South." That will come as a shock to Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans...and probably a bunch of others that we can't think of because we don't live in the South, either. I mean, there's Washington D.C., of course, but I'm not sure that counts.

Considering the history of the regions, too, I think that might be part of why some translators want to default to the New York area, since everybody thinks of the American Revolution as starting around there, and the thing about Kansai is that it's where Kyoto is, and that's where the capital of Japan was for centuries before they moved it to Tokyo (hence Kyoto, meaning "capital city," and Tokyo, meaning "eastern capital"). But there were American settlers in the South before there were any in the Northeast.

Anyway. It's a subject that probably ought to be revisited every so often, because we do have our reasons for making the choices we do, but after defaulting to them for a while, we sometimes forget the why. And the why is important, so it's good to be reminded.

Today I'm thankful for having lots of time to play Pokemon, evolving a bunch of Pokemon, pizza being on sale, getting plenty of sleep this morning, and finishing watching Miraculous before the noise curfew.
