This morning a friend of ours IMed us to ask for help with a translation. We love showing off how smart we are, especially when it's helpful, so it was no problem at all. It was a question of a pronoun with an unknown antecedent. Or rather, the antecedent was known, because it was right after the "this" in parentheses, but it didn't make a whole lot of sense. But that doesn't matter.

Anyway, she said that without the parenthetical antecedent (wow, this entry has big words!), the way she had the sentence translated worked very well with the rest of the paragraph, and then she gave us her translation. And then we said, "Actually, to us it looks more like this..." It seems like she had a hard time getting enough into the Japanese to realize that the word order is guaranteed to not match the word order in English translation. If that makes any sense.

The point is, we see a lot of very good translators who just need a little more practice and help. Maybe coaching? I wonder if it would be arrogant to suggest we start up our own website or LJ community dedicated to helping people translate better. We could proofread, answer questions, etc. etc. I don't know. It's a thought. We'd welcome any feedback.

Another update!

Oh my gosh, I can't believe we didn't realize until just now that it's Soichiro Hoshi's birthday! We should do something. Maybe we'll cook up those chocolate molten lava muffin thingies we got a mix for to use for our birthday. Not that that would benefit him at all, but we need some snacks for Pepper Dennis, since we don't have any Chex Mix.

I am sore today, but not nearly to the point of not being able to move, so it's all good.

Lately, we've really been wanting to cosplay Hikaru and Kaoru from Host Club. Why? Purely for the attention. And of course because we ♥ Host Club and want everyone to know it, but mostly for the attention. I mean, since the anime started, I already mentioned all the Host Club icons we've seen, and how most of them are Hikaru and Kaoru. They really seem to be the most popular characters of a very popular show.

And, actually slightly to our disappointment, we discovered that the manga is being published in English by Viz, and there's already more than one volume out. We really should have realized sooner, since we know of at least one person reading the manga who we didn't think read Japanese that much. In our defense, the only English manga we follow closely is the stuff we translate. That's probably very elitist of us, but it's not to be elitist that we don't read the English manga.

Anyway, the manga being out in America means that even more people know about Host Club, and so even more people would recognize the costumes from Host Club. And on the forums we were reading to find out about this, it looked like Hikaru and Kaoru are still the favorites. And with the right poses... ew, that feels wrong.

Unfortunately, we really don't have the money for Host Club costumes, or any other costumes, really. I really think it would be awesome to go to Disneyland as either Kairi and Namine from KH2 or Husky and Cooro from +ANIMA. We'd probably want wigs for Hikaru and Kaoru anyway, since they wear school uniforms, and with our glasses we could easily be mistaken for a pair of Kyouyas. It's just as well, because I don't know if it would be fair for us to cosplay Host Club without baranoneko, since we already planned a group for the mythical imaginary time when we're all at a convention or other event involving cosplay together. But we want to soooooooo bad!

Oh well.

Today I'm thankful for new air conditioner filters, baking mixes, Nature Valley oat & honey granola bars, the ending theme to FushigiBoshi no FutagoHime Gyu!, and the opening theme to the same.

PS: If you haven't checked out our earlier entry from today about Japanese translations, please do and let us know what you think, if anything, about our idea!
