A battle of wills

This Pokemon tournament featured our first experience with a battle actually timing out. Athena had managed to take out two of the other guy's Pokemon, and he'd managed to take out two of hers, so it was down to Athena's Clefable and his Toxapex. He had a pretty neat strategy to poison his opponent's Pokemon and then just wait it out using Protect and Baneful Bunker, until the poison knocked out the other Pokemon. The problem was twofold. First, Athena's Clefable has Magic Guard, which means it can only be hurt by damage done with moves--not effects like Burn or Poison. And second, his Toxapex didn't have any damage-dealing moves. It did, however, have very high defense and special defense, and poison-type Pokemons like Toxapex are strong against fairy types like Clefable. And to make matters worse, Toxapex was holding some Black Sludge, which restored HP to it after every turn.

So all Athena can do is whittle away veeerrrrry slowly at the Toxapex's HP, which the Black Sludge ever so slightly restores it, and meanwhile, no HP is being lost from Clefable, so it just went on and on and on and on and on, and oh my goodness, we are so thankful the Pokemon people had the foresight to put time limits on battles, because that thing was going on forever. It was a battle of wills to see who would lose patience with the whole thing before time ran out, and clearly neither trainer was willing to capitulate.

That battle still wasn't as annoying as the one guy with the Corsola. That one is too painful to recount.

Today I'm thankful for having a Rosetta Stone in our museum in Animal Crossing, Pokemon battle time limits, the lovely weather we had today, getting to watch the end of Kid Cosmic season one last night, and Chips Ahoy cookies with Reese's Pieces.
