But in the meantime, it's New Year's Eve! And that means New Year's Eve meme! ...Or whatever they're calling these things nowadays. Anyway, let's have a year in review, featuring the first snippets of the first post from each month!
We didn't have a toast for the new year, partially because we waited out the time until midnight by watching more Wotakoi, and so we were too distracted to think of it.
Our plans to play Kingdom Hearts all day were thwarted by the arrival of a simulpub chapter we had to translate. It occurred to us last night that today might be when it showed up, so we were expecting to see it in our email this morning, but as we kept going and going through all the morning emails, we still didn't see it. We got our hopes up. And then, just about right when I was forgetting all about it because we clicked on an email link to read an article, we came back and that was the next email.
So we didn't have as much Kingdom Hearts time as we wanted, but we still got plenty because it was only one chapter, fortunately.
The idea today was to finish our monthly simulpub chapter, go to the grocery store, get a head start on one of the three things we have due in the next two weeks, and then play Kingdom Hearts. But the monthly simulpub had other ideas. Oh my goodness, with the wordiness in this chapter. There was even one of those "hey, let's have a scientific explanation with diagrams!" sort of things, only it was actually (deliberately) a bad analogy, so the first time through, it was like, "What are you even talking about?" We went grocery shopping in the middle of the chapter, and finished it...just in time for dinner. Also, our brains were fried by then, so we decided it was in our best interests to dispense with the head start on next week's work and go straight to the Kingdom Hearts.
After all I had to say on Sunday, here I am on Tuesday with very little to say. We went to Disneyland yesterday and had a good time, but there aren't really any stories about it. We mostly just wandered around and found places to sit and talk. Oh! but I just remembered one of things that got brought up, which is that they're bringing Mickey's Philharmagic to Disneyland. They're actually doing something "new" that I'm excited about! ...Come to think of it, we've never seen Mickey's Philharmagic in English. And I don't think we've seen it since we learned that the original hand-animator for Lumiere also did the computer animation for him in the attraction. So that's cool.
We're back from our Disneyland trip and boy are our arms tired. Apparently our niece believes that the ground at Disneyland is not fit for her royal feet to walk upon, which meant if she wasn't in the stroller, she was insisting on being carried. And like the saps that we are, we obliged her.
We slept in until 10:30 this morning, which is an hour later than we usually sleep on Saturdays. I admit we were up talking a little later than usual, but it's definitely looking like we were tireder than we thought. We'll have to be careful not to push ourselves so much.
Two days before Anime Expo, and we don't have any work to do! ...I mean, there's always a deadline, but our next one can wait until after the convention. ...And there should be a chapter of Edens Zero at some point. But anyway, our plan was to take it easy. We may not be succeeding very well, though.
Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!! I'm so excited you guys!!! But I'm way ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning. [Note: This was followed by a long rambling story leading up to our discovery of more Miraculous on Netflix.]
We just tried our hand at making chocolate truffles and it looks like our experiment has failed. We think it's still salvageable, which would be good, because that would be a fair amount of chocolate gone to waste otherwise.
After being so good and going to bed early last night, we ended up staying up late tonight. We blame Ken Akamatsu, even though it's not even really his fault...I think? So we don't actually blame him, but it's true that if we hadn't had a chapter of UQ Holder! to translate, we would have had a pretty easy day. We wanted to finish our first draft of Saiyuki 2 so we could get a full night of sleep (or close to one) before starting the edit, and to do that plus UQ Holder! required working up until bedtime.
Today was the big day! Our plans were to finish translating this month's UQ Holder reallyreallyfast!, and then settle down for a Miraculous marathon. We'd watch six or seven episodes, take a break for dinner and some exercise, and then watch seven or six more. And then we'd find a new dream. Well, the day did not go according to plan. [Note: This is when we were hoping for the second half of Miraculous Season Three. We still have not seen those episodes, but with our busy schedule, we're hoping they don't come along until February, for our motivation's sake.]
We knew our Super Crunch wasn't going to be over until we survived Tuesday, but boy oh boy, did we not know how much endurance it would take. I mean, of course we could just say no to stuff, so we are partly responsible for this, but that doesn't make it any less daunting.
Yuuuuup, that's our year in a nutshell. I mean, it might seem a little skewed with the simulpubs, because UQ Holder always comes in around the beginning of the month, but it's still not too inaccurate.
I usually like to take some time at the end of the year to look back on everything, but we've barely had time to process anything not work-related these last couple of days. And I think that's likely to continue. Still, I have a few minutes now.
Despite the super-crunches that came along at the end of the year, I think this year has actually been slightly less busy than the couple of years before. I mean, I kind of get the feeling we basically took July off. Not so good for our finances, but we needed it for our mental health. Unfortunately, we didn't get to recharge completely, but we did recharge to a point where we're functional again. Hopefully our current super-crunch won't destroy all that.
But! this year brought some things that have really enlivened us! First, there was Kingdom Hearts III, which is a visually stunning game, I will give it that. We were a little disappointed in the story, but Sora is just as lovable as ever. And now we get to translate the manga! And hopefully make the dialogue better!
Even more than that, though, was the return (to our lives) of Miraculous. I think this show has probably done more to invigorate us than...I don't know, I wanted to say something to express how much life it has given us, but I have a hard time expressing my own emotions. Basically, I'm pretty sure it's what's kept us going these last several months. I mean, not that life has been terrible, just that our load has been heavy and we are very tired. Miraculous gives us the energy we need to keep going. We're so excited to get more! ...But hopefully when we're done with this super-crunch, so we don't have to totally blow off work to watch those episodes (because right now, that would be our first priority).
In the meantime, we also have the latest Pokemon game to play! That keeps us going, too, but we need more than the 20 minutes it takes to watch an episode of Miraculous. Anyway, it just served as a reminder of how much we really do like Pokemon.
Anyway. I guess my main thoughts on the year are yes, it has been long and busy. But maybe not as busy as last year. Things are starting to change. Farley retired. Our rent keeps going up. We're thinking of moving, but we don't have time to think about it seriously, and we are not impulsive, so we can't just get up and go. A lot of our editors have moved on all of a sudden. And here we are, just plugging away. Oh yeah, I guess Saint Young Men is a new thing this year. This year was super eventful, and I just can't even concentrate. I need to go to sleep...so we can get back to work.
This year I'm thankful for Miraculous coming back into our lives, getting to play Kingdom Hearts III, getting the new Pokemon game, the wonderful times we had with Farley, and Heavenly Father helping us to survive another busy year.
