Happy Mother's Day!

And I unabashedly say that to everyone reading this, regardless of motherhood status or even gender or sex. Why? because anybody can be happy today! Even if they have to ignore the fact that it's Mother's Day to do it. I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but to be honest, I get a little annoyed when people keep posting about how Mother's Day is hard for them because of whatever reason that makes them feel like a failure as a mother. Why? because Mother's Day isn't to honor you for your motherly contributions. It's a day for you to be grateful for your mother or any other woman who's been a good influence in your life. It's not about celebrating you. It's about gratitude. (And I said all this to my own mother when I called her to wish her a happy Mother's Day (after wishing her a happy Mother's Day and playing a song for her, of course).)

This year was a little odd for me, because we had more than one person wish us a happy Mother's Day, and then explain why they felt that was appropriate even though Athena and I aren't mothers. And of course I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that! It's just that in the environments we've lived in for over a decade, actually having children has never been a requirement to get flowers and chocolate on Mother's Day, so there was a bit of a culture shock thing going on.

In fact, at our October General Conference, nowhere near Mother's Day, the prophet gave a talk to the women of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he said the following:

"Please note that anytime I use the word mother, I am not talking only about women who have given birth or adopted children in this life. I am speaking about all of our Heavenly Parents’ adult daughters. Every woman is a mother by virtue of her eternal divine destiny."

And because of bishops we've had in the past (back in Heritage Ward, one of our bishops said he likes to call Mother's Day "Daughter of God Day"), our reaction to that was, "Yeah, we know."

So happy Daughter of God Day, and may you enjoy it whoever you are!

As for us, we used the evening to watch Ad-Live 2018 with Yuki Kaji and Wataru Hatano, and oh my goodness, it was the weirdest thing. I mean, even without all the lines being ad-libbed (and prompted by pieces of paper with random phrases that the actors pulled out randomly throughout the show), the premise in and of itself was pretty bizarre. They discovered a new planet that was called Happy Millennium, and this guy found himself at an empty house where there was supposed to be a party to celebrate the anniversary of its discovery (apparently he was told the wrong time). Then, despite the fact that there was no party, another guy showed up to deliver some soba for everybody, and the two guys got to talking, then there was a blackout, then the radio came on with a news report saying that Happy Millennium was going to crash into the Earth in just ten years. So the first guy asks the soba delivery guy to come back to that house in ten years and help him accomplish his dream. And it just gets weirder from there.

But it was a lot of fun. At one point Yuki Kaji made up this whole story about how he went from delivering soba to shaking flavor onto potato chips, and after struggling to be the best potato chip flavor shaker in the business, he gave up in despair because he could never beat his friend, but then one day he discovered that his friend was dabbling in dark potatoes. It was kind of awesome.

Today I'm thankful for getting chocolate at church today, having a lovely chat with our mother on Mother's Day, getting to watch Ad-Live 2018, getting to color our PJ Masks coloring thingies (we'll post a picture on Facebook tomorrow), and plans to work at the Disneyland office tomorrow.
