The miracle of Miraculous

We found out earlier today that apparently Miraculous has been picked up for a live action film adaptation. ...And a live action TV show, now that we look it up again. To be honest, I'm not very happy about it. I mean, it's great that enough (of the right) people like the show that something like this would happen, but the company doing it is based in the States, and American live action stuff takes itself so seriously. One of the things we like about Miraculous is that it's not afraid to be silly! We just watched an episode where the supervillain made it so the superheroes had to talk in rhyme while dancing nonstop or they would turn into shiny pink statues. A Miraculous without that kind of silliness would not be the same.

And I really want to go into all the amazing things about Miraculous right now, but I'm having such a hard time organizing my thoughts about it. I just love everything about it so much that my feelings for one thing spill over into my feelings for the other thing, and all coherent thought turns into, "IT'S JUST THE BEST, OKAY!" One thought I did manage to articulate is that I love how Marinette (the main character, for those of you unfamiliar with the show) is so...okay, I guess I didn't articulate the thought very well after all, but she has these moments where she freaks out, and she's just yelling at the sky and I love it, because she's not holding back. And that's really what I love about the show overall, is that despite its over-the-top-ness in many instances, it feels very genuine. It's not afraid to poke fun at itself, either. And all the characters are so great!

Right, that was something else I wanted to mention. Marinette has flaws and she makes mistakes. Back about 20 years ago when I first started defending Disney characters, one of the major complaints was that they're all so perfect, and at the time (before I re-watched Cinderella and realized that she almost beat a cat with a broom) I thought, "Well, what's wrong with that? Why shouldn't we have stories with characters that show us it is possible to live up to a high standard?" And frankly, I still don't think it's a problem.

What I think is even worse is what we have in movies these days, which is that the characters are still flawed, but nothing they do is ever a mistake. They're the good guys, so everything they do was the right choice in the end. I think that reinforces an abstract notion that people seem to have that as long as they have the right label, they can do whatever they want and it's right. I hate that idea, so I really love that the characters in Miraculous are always making mistakes, then learning and growing from them. And I think that's a much better lesson to learn.

But speaking of our obsessive watching of Miraculous, it has come to our attention that we have other entertainment things to consume, so maybe we shouldn't just rewatch Miraculous again and again. We want to at least get through Season 2 a second time. And then maybe we'll...divide the time a little more.

Today I'm thankful for getting to watch the Frightingale episode of Miraculous, getting to watch the Gorizilla episode of Miraculous, getting to sleep in this morning, getting to try the new Butterfingers (apologies to our friend who hates the new recipe, but we like it pretty well; we probably won't buy a lot of it, though, so we won't be upset if the market tells them to go back to the old recipe (which I also enjoyed)), and getting the blinds to close after breaking the cord.
