Alethea & Athena
Have I done any good?

hugs
Our plans to do chores today were thwarted by a last minute call from the bishop, asking if Athena would be available to lead the singing at the funeral that was held today. I'm ashamed to admit that we had a bad attitude about it (which we at least had the decency to keep to ourselves). We didn't really know the deceased; we were only in his ward because of the boundary change about a year and a half ago, and since we've been in the Primary, we haven't had much opportunity to talk to most of the adults. But from what we did know about him, he was a very good man who deserved a good funeral, so even though we would rather have had this Saturday to ourselves, and we grumbled about it to each other, we were happy for the opportunity to serve. And it was a lovely funeral.

There was a song that they printed the lyrics to in the program but for some reason chose not to have us sing. When she spoke, his daughter said that when choosing music for the service, she opened the hymnbook right to this song, and she took it to be a message from her father. It is a great message, so I figure I might as well share the lyrics here, too:

Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad, and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone's burden been lighter today,
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help, was I there?

Then wake up, and do something more
Than dream of your mansions above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.

There are chances for good all around just now,
Opportunities right in our way.
Do not let them pass by, saying sometime I'll try,
But go and do something today.
'Tis noble of man to work and to give.
Love's labor has merit alone.
Only he who does something helps others to live,
To God each good work will be known.

Then wake up, and do something more
Than dream of your mansions above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.

Today I'm thankful for managing to get our grocery shopping done, making it home in time to get ready for the funeral, not having to walk to the funeral, the opportunity to serve, and having time to play Kingdom Hearts.
