Who's your favorite?

Whew, today has been a whirlwind of activity! ...Well, mostly just translating as usual. But it was unusual in that we were working on anime on a different day of the week than usual. And we also did laundry.

Anyway, we decided to do a Facebook survey on who everyone's favorite Sailor Scout/Soldier/Guardian is. (I have to say, I tend to prefer "Sailor Soldier," because it really rolls off the tongue, but Guardian is the official version. But I ask about all three because I never know what versions people are familiar with.) I didn't say who our favorites are, because in all honesty, I don't even know anymore. Here's how it all went down:

When we were in middle school, we and our friends and sisters discovered Sailor Moon. I think the first people to pick favorites were Aurora and our oldest school friend, who both fell in love with Sailor Mars. Athena tells me that Celeste liked Jupiter at first, but we'll have to ask her to confirm. But as the series went on and we got to know Sailor Venus better, we were all like, "Whoa, she's just like Celeste," so we all just kind of assigned them to each other. Everybody talked about how annoying Sailor Moon was, but Athena saw some good in her and didn't think she deserved all the hate, so she decided that Sailor Moon was her favorite.

I think because we were both pretty geeky, everyone kind of assigned us to Sailor Mercury, and now that Athena had a clear other favorite, that's who I ended up with. Not that I had a problem with it; I really liked all of them. It is kind of curious, though, because we were all pretty proud of how smart we were, so it's not like everyone was like, "You're the smart one, so you be Sailor Mercury!" Thinking about it, it might be that Mercury is the biggest goody-two-shoes of the group.

One of the pattern companies actually sold licensed patterns for Sailor Moon costumes back then, but Sarah was the only one who was still little enough to fit the largest size. So Mom made her a costume, and that may or may not be when it was determined that she liked Sailor Jupiter. I really don't remember how that happened. But after Mom made the one costume, she was like, "No more; I'm done. You want more costumes, you make them yourselves." And that's how we started sewing costumes. She was at least nice enough to help me adapt the pattern to fit larger people.

Later, Sarah switched over to Sailor Chibi Moon, and Athena thinks it's for reasons that are similarly defiant to how Athena chose Sailor Moon. But of course there was also the, "You're the little one. You be Chibi Moon." factor. Of course, now she's the third tallest (you could say second tallest, since we're the tallest, but the point is, she's not so little anymore).

And that's the story of our Sailor Moon favorites. Later we discovered the Outer Senshi, and we thought they were all pretty cool, but nobody really gravitated toward any of them as a favorite, although I liked Neptune because we both played the violin. Our high school friends adored Saturn...which I think may have had something to do with her being the "evil" one.

Anyway. Today I'm thankful for getting to reminisce about Sailor Moon, finishing our work quota for today, being just about packed, getting to watch an episode of My Little Pony, and Page being so cute hanging out with us.
