Well, imagine our surprise when we checked Anime Expo's website today and discovered that Sora himself is going to be a guest of honor! We just posted on Facebook asking if we should meet him as Donald and Goofy or Chip and Dale. Whatever we choose, we'll probably wear the other set on another day, and just make it a Kingdom Hearts weekend. It's funny, because we were playing Union Cross this morning, and I was looking back on things, and thinking maybe our destiny does not lie with Kingdom Hearts after all, and now here Sora's going to be at Anime Expo. (That may have nothing to do with our destiny, but we can still daydream.)
So that kind of derailed my train of thought. But anyway, we're taking the day off!!! Can you believe it? Oh my goodness, so much happiness... Aaaahhh... We were sort of originally planning to do another translation or two first, but then we starting literally falling ill, and we thought, "Hmm, maybe we should take a break." So we are! Tadah! (Nothing serious. Just a sore throat, maybe some tightness in the chest, mild headaches (that are almost certainly enhanced by the lovely new super strong wire in my braces).) And we're planning to spend the afternoon lying down. But first, LiveJournal!
Why? Because since we decided we have free time today, we got caught up on UQ Holder! reviews, and the reviewer we read most frequently has a nasty habit of attributing everything to retcon. Any time there's a plot twist, it must have been retconned in. But, since it's our job to pay attention to every single tiny little written detail (artistic details are not our jurisdiction), we are of the opinion that Ken Akamatsu has not, in fact, been retconning everything, but has planned for at least 40% of the plot twists that have come up. And so, since we foresaw a reveal that, if we are correct, will be huuuuuuge, we wanted to post about it before it happens, so when the reveal finally comes, if anybody tries to attribute it to retconning, we'll be able to say, "Nope. We saw it coming. Here's where we posted about it. You'll notice the date is long before the reveal was actually made."
So what is the big secret, you ask? It is our opinion that Albert Chamomile is, in reality, none other than Nagi Springfield, the Thousand Master himself!
I don't remember what first made us think it, but the first thing that happens in Negima! to point to it is when they want Takahata to do something, and Negi doesn't know what to do, and Chamo's all, "You want me to talk to him for you?" Why would a random ermine sprite have more pull with Takahata than the son of his old pal? Unless the ermine sprite was
his old pal.
I will grant that Chamo gave Negi a backstory about a little sister or something, but these things can easily be lies. I will also point out that Negi was under the impression that being turned into an ermine was one of the punishments for breaking the rules of magic. So if Chamo is really just an ermine sprite with a little sister (indicating that it's a whole family of ermine sprites that have always been ermines their whole lives), why would Negi think that? First of all, there's absolutely no indication of that actually happening to anyone, and second of all, Negi breaks the rules all the time and there is no talk of ermine transformations. Clearly someone told Negi that to scare him, but where did they
get that idea?
Unfortunately, it was years ago that we translated Negima, so I can't remember aaaallll the details that have us suspecting that Chamo is really Nagi, but the one I will point out that I think is seriously a big deal is when Negi had his Cosmo Entelekeia (I never did remember the spelling...) fantasy. He was living a happy life with both of his parents, and you know who wasn't there? His best pal Chamo. Our theory is that Chamo wasn't there because he doesn't exist in a world where Nagi is Nagi.
As for the evidence in UQ Holder!. So far, there is nothing to contradict the theory, but there are a few things, with Chamo's appearance in the last chapter, that hold it up. The biggest one is the fact that he knows of some of Nagi's workshops that Evangeline does not know of. True, he might know of them because he was Negi's best bud, but we like to think it's because he's Nagi. The other evidence is when Chamo says that he really likes to tell people about Negi's heroics. Again, this could be a best friend thing, but we like to read a more fatherly tone into it (obviously because we're biased).
But speaking of this latest chapter, it never occurred to us that Chachazero might have been a host for Arika's soul until we saw how much Chamo cared about Chachazero. It's been pointed out that they were close friends in Negima, so maybe, maybe not. We always assumed that Nekane was Arika. We'll see if any
of those theories are true.
But on that note, I will say that, along with our Chamo=Nagi theory... When we first saw the first promotional art for UQ Holder!, we looked at it, pointed at Jinbei, and said, "That one's Negi." He has the same hair, for crying out loud. No other two characters in all of the Negima universe have the same hair, not even Fuuka and Fumika (the twins). Okay, maybe Zazie and Poyo. But anyway, we think that whatever made Nagi have to be Chamo made Negi be Jinbei. Of course, how all of that works with both of them having been possessed by the Mage of the Beginning is something we can't explain, so maybe we're wrong. But I think when Jinbei chided Nagumo for reverting back to his old speech pattern, that was more than just a passing remark. But only time will tell.
And there you have it. Incidentally, we also foresaw the possibility of [redacted] being Negi's crush. Once again, it was too long ago to remember all the details, but there were a lot of flags for those two in the Magical World arc.
Today I'm thankful for having a day off!!!, Sora coming to Anime Expo, having appropriate costumes to wear, getting to sleep in this morning, and it being time to watch Ducktales.
