So tired

tired
We were already up past bedtime, and then we had a small work email to take care of...which turned into a much longer ordeal than we'd hoped...but we sort of knew that would happen, which is why it turned out to be a problem to begin with. There were some flashback sound effects that we neglected to check on because we were tired and we knew it would take forever and they're just sound effects anyway and who cares and they're cropped so as to be unrecognizable anyway and they're just sound effects anyway so who caaaarrrresssss... (Sorry; I get whinier when I'm tired. I know; it's my own fault.)

So our editor emailed and asked us to go look up those sound effects, and I'm wondering if he really needed us to find them or if he'd already found them himself and wanted us to find them so we wouldn't be upset if we ever looked at the English version and discovered they'd been changed but for crying out loud we're not going to remember every single sound effect we translate--that's why they weren't there in the first place! And I'm probably overthinking it, because contrary to the logical thing, that's what I do when I'm tired. Then I get myself worked up and annoyed because I feel manipulated, when I probably wasn't, but I do find it to be a strange coincidence that of all the flashback sound effects he asked us to look up, he only asked for the ones we got wrong.

Okay, Athena came up with a theory that maybe the letterer did try to look them up for reference, but couldn't find them because we got them wrong. That's a plausible theory that wouldn't be a, "By the way, I need you to know you made a mistake here." Sorry for suspecting you, Editor.

As for the mistakes themselves, all we can say is we're sorry. They should be fixed now, though. We're usually not that lazy, but we are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired this month. So tired, in fact, that all those Os are the result of me putting my finger on the O key and leaving it there while I took a few breaths because I didn't have the energy to pick it up again. And I don't mean to make excuses. Frankly, we're getting a little worried about the quality of our work. We think we're managing to maintain it. A couple of flashback sound effects aren't going to make or break a chapter. And we even think that chapter turned out pretty well, despite being about a subject that we know next to nothing about.

I should stop rambling and get some sleep. Today I'm thankful for having more time for KamiAso, feeling slightly better rested today, getting to see Usamaro again (that's Tsukito's rabbit), getting to write a happy review of our Risumaru plushie, and getting to have a delicious Freschetta pizza for dinner.

I've worked on scripts (not yours) where lines of dialogue (in photocopy-style flashbacks, so not a paraphrase) were translated with significant differences from the original. One was a whole fanbook-type-segment that collected quotes from throughout the series... So. Skipping a few silly little sound effects shouldn't be a big issue.

There's one series that has flashback sfx fairly regularly, and I think in the last book I might not have lettered them, or I lettered them anew (with whatever the translator provided, which again she probably didn't look up the original to match) rather than copying and pasting the exact translation and placement from the original page like I normally do. I like to look them up in the printed book myself whether there's a translation or not, because I can never be sure if something was changed before or after a script got to me (if they provide a page number I'm more trusting, but still gotta double-check). But this was Yowamushi Pedal and there are just way way WAY too many panels of the same characters wearing the same uniforms with the same expressions zooming forward from microscopically different angles in every chapter, to say nothing of 6 (so far) omnibuses... and no way the readers are gonna care if it's ziiiip or ziiiiiip/shoom or fwoom...

Thanks for your perspective! That helps us to feel better, at least as far as the readers' sake. Couldn't really say what the deal is with this editor; he's new to us. But this is like the one time out of probably hundreds that we didn't bother to try to find them, and we were tired, so...

Oh my goodness, Yowamushi Pedal. Yeah, I'm pretty sure no one's going to care, except for maybe the super nerds, like from the Please Please PLEEZE Get a Life Foundation (an imaginary foundation from Animaniacs for super nerds who need to get a life; I think the cartoon was written by Paul Dini, who's done a lot in the comics scene; the best example is at the end of the fake commercial where a guy says, "Did you notice that they misspelled the third 'please'? I think that was intentional." And oh my goodness, I just realized that it makes perfect sense that nobody got our "Southern Master" joke in our Negima re-translation...)

Anyway, thanks again for the support!
